Hi all I'm new to EV's and new to this forum. I recently purchased a used 2018 A3 Etron hybrid. So far I love this car, but I'm having trouble getting the charger to work. I have the appropriate outlet with the 30 amp service, so enough to power it, and it's a dedicated circuit so nothing else is drawing current from the circuit. When I plug in the charger it says plugged in and charging the amber light on the car lights up but never changes to green. After about a minute cycle there is a sound from the car and the charger switches to read Plugged, not Plugged and charging as it had previously. While it is Plugged and Charging the on of button on the charger flashes. It does this on both the 100% and the 50% mode. The person I bought this from said they never charged it at home they always used a public charger. I have heard the Audi charger cables are notorious for being faulty, but I'm also wondering if this could be a sign that the Ac to Dc converter in the car has gone bad. Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated! thanks!

I had this issue 2 years ago, using 220V service at home, and the dealer replaced the Audi charger without any hesitation, saying that it was a known defect, at least on 2018 models. All perfect since.

Thank you! I’m hoping thats all it is. You said you had the issue did yours stop after like a minute of cycling?

HI Erickson
I am also new to the forum. My 2018 did not come with a charger, so I bought a Prius Prime charger from a friend. Works great. There are a lot of these available and they are cheap, so if you don't get the dealer to replace your charger, you have another option.

Our initial portable EVSE that came with our 2017 A3 Sportback e-tron also malfunctioned, with the connector melting. Audi replaced it with a new one and it has worked perfectly since. We discovered that the manufacturer of the original unit was the same manufacturer that built faulty portable chargers for the GM Volt. We have used our replacement portable EVSE on both 120 volt and 240 volt circuits for over 7.5 years now without any issues. You probably have one of the faulty original units. Go for another brand, since the Audi units are very expensive to replace and newer ones are also smaller.

You want to consider the car's charging scheduler too. My car is finicky in that it sometimes wants to obey the preferred charging time instead of charging immediately. You can tell it's obeying the charging scheduler if the light for the top button (the one with the clock icon) is glowing red. To ensure that it will charge immediately, press the bottom button (the one without the clock on it) after you plug in - it will glow red instead and the car should begin charging immediately and not stop until full. BTW - the buttons that I'm referring to are just to the left of the charging port.

Yes. Mine would go yellow but never go to green, then shut off after a minute or so. The replacement one from the dealer under warranty appears to be Audi branded but a different manufacturer than the old one. Currently running 80% electric and 20% gasoline, dealer said the ICE needs to run occasionally.
